Of course, we mainly have office workplaces at the KBA. Classic administration has taken place and still takes place as a rule in the many offices of the KBA. However, the digitalisation of administration opens up a multitude of other possibilities for all of us, for example mobile working. Office work at the KBA is as diverse as its tasks and although the office workplaces are apparently similar, we work with different prerequisites. Depending on the task, a wide variety of software products and working methods are used at our workplaces. Our educational and academic qualifications are also different and enable us to work as a team to meet the challenges we face. The heterogeneous fields of knowledge characterise the varied administration at the KBA. And because not everyone can know everything, a distinctive and constructive cooperation across all levels in our working environment is a basis for the broadband knowledge transfer and the lived collegiality at the KBA.
The Harrislee laboratory - HAL for short - is the KBA’s latest achievement and at the same time a special one in several respects. Firstly, because of its location in the neighbouring municipality of Harrislee, about nine kilometres from the Flensburg headquarters; secondly, with the laboratory officially commissioned in 2021, the KBA received its own testing facility for the first time; and last but not least, because it is precisely this facility, with its complex technical and information technology equipment, that provides the basis for a wide variety of test scenarios, which the KBA specialists develop depending on the object under investigation.
The laboratory combines office work with work in the workshop. The creative team of forty works closely together. The technicians develop and create special test fixtures required for specific measurements, the IT specialists check the data structures of the vehicles to be examined and the engineers carry out the tests from planning to evaluation. Everything here goes hand in hand with a view to the common goal: only vehicles that conform to regulations, are clean and safe belong on the road.
KBA IT is characterised by a complex and individual range of tasks, which is far more than just classic office IT. With approximately 130 IT employees for operation and further development, KBA IT contributes significantly to the success of the authority and is an essential part of the authority’s strategy.
The central databases in the terabyte range and the IT procedures based on them place high demands on process automation and system monitoring by means of appropriate tools and ITIL V3© orientation due to the high availability requirements (24/7), the volumes of data to be processed daily, the diverse connections to federal, state, local and EU authorities as well as to the economy and the citizen.
KBA’s own data centre in Flensburg provides the infrastructure and diverse server systems to meet the demands of IT operations.
Due to its central position as an information service provider for all aspects of the motor vehicle and its users, KBA-IT develops the individual specialised procedures itself. Software is designed and developed mainly in Java and with data warehouse techniques in projects by a team of about 45 employees. In addition to the use of modern tools, the application of agile methods is an essential success factor, especially Scrum with its sprint philosophy using backlogs and the roles of Scrum Master and Product Owner.
From the internally and externally oriented service desks, IT consulting, Windows, Unix and database system technologies to the administration of networks and the production processing of data, information technology offers highly interesting tasks for experienced and committed IT specialists.
