Road haulage

German goods vehicle traffic

The data are collected on an ongoing basis in questionnaire form by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). The surveys document the journeys of goods vehicles with a load capacity of more than 3.5 tonnes and truck tractors with a permissible total mass of more than 6 tonnes which carry out road freight transport. The statistical results are published on a monthly basis around five months after the survey.

The results are presented according to the four themes of traffic density, regional flows, domestic services and carriage of goods. The number of trips, distance covered, volume of goods transported and haulage capacity performance are all recorded.

European goods vehicle traffic

The data is gathered by to each Member State of the European Union and submitted by the Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg (EUROSTAT) in the form of condensed annual results. The KBA publishes the processed results annually. Due to the long communication path, the statistics are available about a year after publication of the German evaluations.

The statistics include road freight transport according to journeys and transport in, from, to and through Germany. The results are summarised according to the four themes of total traffic, cross-border traffic, domestic traffic and carriage of goods. The number of trips or transports, distance covered, volume of goods transported and haulage capacity performance are all recorded. These are presented on the basis of journey-related and cargo-related characteristics, with German and foreign vehicles generally being presented separately.
