Automated / Fully Automated Driving
The Federal Republic of Germany has created the legal basis for automated / fully automated driving with the amendment of the “Straßenverkehrsgesetz” (StVG) of July 28, 2021. In the EU legal framework the legal basis for the approval of automated / fully automated vehicles in small series production was created with the amendment of Regulation (EU) No 2018/858 of November 16, 2022.
In this context, the KBA acts as the German type approval authority for the vehicles and driving functions, and is actively involved in defining national and international technical requirements.
As the national type approval authority for vehicles with automated or fully automated driving functions, the KBA issues the following approvals upon application:
- National type approvals for motor vehicles with a fully automated driving function corresponding to level 4
- EU type approvals for motor vehicles with a fully automated driving function corresponding to level 4 in small series production
- Testing approvals for motor vehicles with an automated or fully automated driving function from level 3 onwards
- Type approvals for an automated or fully automated driving functions from level 3 onwards, which can be activated after registration of the motor vehicle
