Online information from the Central Vehicle Register (ZFZR) provides you with information about vehicles that are currently registered to you as the owner or for which you are stored in the ZFZR as the last owner.
The information covers vehicles registered to you as a private individual and not company vehicles.

The provision of information from the ZFZR is regulated in the Straßenverkehrsgesetz (StVG). The conditions under which data may be transferred, the purposes for which it may be transferred, and to whom, are set out in the transfer regulations in §§ 35 ff. of the StVG. The transmission of data from the ZFZR requires a corresponding informal written request.
The recipients of the information are initially authorities and other public agencies in Germany (§ 35 StVG) and competent agencies abroad (§ 37, § 37b StVG). The transfer of data must be necessary to achieve one of the purposes listed in these legal bases.
From the ZFZR, simple register information can also be issued to private recipients (citizens and companies) in accordance with Section 39 (1) StVG or extended register information in accordance with Section 39 (2) StVG. This information can also be transmitted to recipients abroad.

For reasons of data protection, information pursuant to Section 39 of the StVG is sent by mail without exception and is subject to a fee. The fee for information currently amounts to € 5.10 per motor vehicle or trailer and is charged in the course of postal delivery by way of cash on delivery. Postal charges and C.O.D. charges are also payable in this case.
According to this legal basis, the data must be transmitted if the recipient, stating the license plate number or vehicle identification number in question, demonstrates that he or she requires the data to assert, secure or enforce or to satisfy or defend legal claims in connection with participation in road traffic or to bring a private action for violations committed in road traffic.
Furthermore, the time of the damage event (event date) must be stated so that in the event of a change of owner in the meantime it is clear which vehicle owner is to be claimed against.
Presentation means plausible assertion, acceptable explanation, coherent and contradiction-free description of a fact from which the conditions for issuing information can arise.
Participation in road traffic may be active or passive (perpetrator, injurer, victim, injured party, etc.). An indirect connection with participation in road traffic is sufficient. However, the participation must have a relation to the road traffic event. This is particularly the case if the motor vehicle is in use. However, participation in road traffic can also exist if the motor vehicle is parked. The use of the motor vehicle does not necessarily have to take place on public roads. It is sufficient if the vehicle is parked in a private parking lot or garage and the vehicle causes or suffers damage there, for example, or if the use of the vehicle infringes the rights of others (e. g. ownership, possession of the property).
This legal basis permits the transmission of further data for the enforcement of traffic-related legal claims, subject to the extended conditions specified therein. Here, the request is possible not only with the license plate number or the vehicle identification number, but also with the personal data of the holder.
The data must be transmitted if the recipient can credibly demonstrate that he or she requires the data to assert, secure or enforce, to satisfy or defend against legal claims in connection with participation in road traffic, theft, other loss of the vehicle or to bring a private action for violations committed in road traffic and that the data could either not be obtained in any other way or could only be obtained with disproportionate effort.
Credible evidence is the statement of verifiable facts or the submission/attachment of corresponding evidence.
In addition to the relevant license plate number or the relevant vehicle identification number, the time of the damage event (event date) must also be stated, so that in the event of a change of owner in the meantime, it is clear which vehicle owner is to be claimed.
The transmission is permissible if the applicant proves in writing that he has obtained title to the vehicle and does not know the whereabouts of the vehicle. This is the case, for example, in an insurance settlement of the claim following the theft of a motor vehicle. The owner will be informed when the vehicle is dealt with under registration law.
The fee for this information is € 6.10 per motor vehicle or trailer according to fee number 144 of the Gebührenordnung für Maßnahmen im Straßenverkehr (GebOSt).
